NUBIAN COUNTERPOISE
A BLENDER PROJECT

CONTEXT AND PRECEDENTS

A Counterpoise is a type of neck amulet worn over the back instead of the chest. In ancient Nubia, these pieces would often be seen carved or casted with old mythological figures, and were seen as protective symbols especially amongst women.

This project was an exploration of 3D modeling and my own identity as a Sudanese woman.

I’ve always been really into learning about jewelry, and I got super interested in ancient pieces and their history. When I found out there was an exhibition about ancient jewelry from my home country, I was thrilled! It was amazing to see all those pieces up close and connect with my own heritage.

I spent time learning how to use Blender for modeling and rendering from scratch, while designing my take on a modern counterpoise.

MIND

BODY

SOUL

I’ve noticed that a lot of these counterpoises are similarly designed. They’re typically divided into three parts:

The Mind, represented as the head of the diety at the top of the amulet.

The Body, represented by the human/physical form of the deity in the center,

And the Soul, represented by the symbolic imaging of the diety.
