AYAH MAHMOUD
A pull-apart and reversible shirt made to raise awareness about the proxy war in Sudan.

FRONT
Includes sewed gash patches and
pocket embroidery work.

BACK
Includes a map of Sudan made from painted and recycled fabrics pull-apart feature along the Nile and internal tabs to reverse the split.
PRECEDENTS

Pull-apart rugs gave inspiration to the pull-apart mechanism across the back of the shirt. The interactive element of physically separating the different elements of the rug and the sinue-biological look of the revealed threads in tension drew my attention.

TESTS
TECHNIQUE SAMPLES

I. SEWING 3D STRUCTURES

II. EMBROIDERY THREAD STITCHES
Next, I tested stitch methods such as straight lines, zigzags, cross-stitching, and triangular stitching with embroidery threads.

III. LAYER AND CUTS
I then tested the dimensionality of layered fabrics of contrasting colors by cutting the top layer and regarding the test in motion.

I. LOW THREAD DENSITY
PULL APART TESTS

II. MEDIUM THREAD DENSITY

III. HIGH THREAD DENSITY

DESIGN DECISIONS

Nile River as a divisive scar
The most prominent geographical feature in the nation. It raises against the map in vibrant blues like a scar.

Torn apart, Blood in the waters
The red thread spills out upon splitting the map like blood to a wound representing the loss of so many lives due to the war.
Sudan Pulled brings awareness to the war in Sudan through a provocative combination of textile and thread that encourages pedestrians in public places to ask questions.
